DWeb Virtual Meetup—DWeb Camp JOMO (or FOMO, in case you missed it) (August 2026)

Join us at our next virtual meetup featuring speakers who presented their projects at DWeb Camp last month!

DWeb Camp 2026 was a big success: We had over 370 campers come out to the Brandenburg forest with over 350 sessions and activities taking place day and night. Even if you were there last month, it would have been impossible to experience all that took place.

One of the pillars of DWeb Camp is JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out):

At Camp, there is more than you can ever possibly experience in one day or one week. Be present and content with where you are at any given moment.

Whether you were camping with us or were unable to make it, we don’t want you to have missed out on some of the best sessions. That’s why our next virtual meetup(s) will feature a few projects and takeaways from Camp. Here are this month’s speakers:

  • Matthew Hodgson: Matthew is the Project Lead & Co-founder of Matrix.org and CEO/CTO of Element. Matrix is a federated chat ecosystem, used to run digitally sovereign communication services, used by many open source / decentralized web communities and government entities. Matthew will give a quick overview of Matrix's journey since its inception in 2014. For years Matrix has explored running on peer-to-peer infrastructure. Matthew will share recent breakthroughs for the chat protocol to be used in local-first contexts.

  • Arushi Bandi: Arushi is the CEO and Co-founder of Habitat, a platform that aims to help non-profit, community, and activist organizations get off Google and enable them to self-host and own their data. Arushi’s talk will focus on the challenges of operating in a world dominated by services that make their supporting infrastructures as invisible as possible. She will discuss the importance of raising awareness of the resources it actually takes to support seamless workflows, and how co-hosting can be a more resilient way people can share the work of running servers together.

  • Alaska (aka Christopher Rose): Alaska is a DJ, producer, and Founder of MDRN Music. At DWeb Camp this year, local authorities came and asked us to shut down the amplified (and even unamplified) sound at night. In response, Alaska built a silent disco web radio that ran on Freifunk’s community wireless network. It allowed anyone on the network to broadcast their DJ sets or live music, and listen to the streams on their own devices. Alaska will share their approach to the app and how it aligns with their work to build infrastructure for underground music communities.

Please join us on Thursday August 27 at 19 CET / 1pm ET / 10am PT for this virtual meetup and hear about some of the projects you may have missed at Camp.

The presentations will be followed by an audience Q&A with the speakers.
